What is MxBio Institute?
MxBio Institute is a major presidential initiative first announced in November 2025 designed to cement U-M as a global leader in life science and translational research. The Institute will tackle one of biomedical science’s hardest problems: translating brilliant science into approved therapies and devices. Compliance requirements, regulatory demands, and fragmented funding often stretch timelines by years. MxBio is designed to compress that timeline without sacrificing rigor. By combining advanced supercomputing, clinical research, and venture capital, MxBio will move discoveries from lab to patients faster.
What does MxBio stand for?
M is for Michigan, Bio is for biomedical innovation and the “x” is a multiplier. MxBio builds on U-M’s tradition of bringing disciplines together to tackle healthcare’s hardest challenges, so that research reaches patients faster and at greater scale.
How is MxBio Institute different from a traditional academic department or center?
MxBio is a new entity designed to connect and support research already underway across U-M’s decentralized university. Rather than replace existing departments and centers, it brings together scientific talent, interdisciplinary research, and commercialization through three connected pillars:
- Faculty Recruitment: Recruits world-renowned scientific leaders from inside U-M and the global community and supports them in building their research programs.
- Research Engine: Connects U-M expertise in engineering and health sciences with Michigan Medicine’s clinical resources, using advanced technologies to accelerate discovery.
- Innovation Engine: Brings in experienced industry experts to turn U-M discoveries into venture-backed companies.
Together, these pillars support and accelerate the development of biomedical therapies and devices to address humanity’s most complex health challenges.
How are you different from Innovation Partnerships and Fast Forward Medical Innovation?
MxBio Institute is a complement, not a competitor. We give U-M scientists, clinicians, engineers, and innovators advanced computing power to turn discoveries into clinical ventures with widespread healthcare impact. We are building a partnership framework with Innovation Partnerships and FFMI and will share details soon.
How can interested researchers participate and access MxBio’s resources?
At the moment, MxBio’s infrastructure is still being built out. Once available, interested faculty with promising research projects can apply to the Institute to access support and resources. MxBio’s model will also welcome new faculty recruits. Sign up for our newsletter to receive updates.
How was the first bio-seedling cohort selected?
The inaugural bio-seedling cohort is a one-year pilot with seven faculty-led projects. Projects were selected based on an analysis of campus-wide high-performance computing usage in biomedical applications. The goal was to find the research best positioned to benefit from expanded computing resources.
How is patient data protected?
Security is built in from the start. Projects that use protected health information (PHI), run only on university-controlled or university-approved infrastructure, with access controls, encryption and audit logging. For cloud work, U-M has HIPAA business associate agreements with AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Learn more here.
How are you ensuring responsible use of AI?
MxBio follows U-M and Michigan Medicine policies on research data and AI. Projects using clinical data go through standard ethics review, and models are evaluated for bias and clinical validity before any use in patient care. Will MxBio use the planned Ypsilanti data center? What is your relationship with the Los Alamos project?
MxBio’s current pilots run on existing U-M approved cloud computing resources. Questions about the facility and U-M partnership with Los Alamos are best directed to the Office of the Vice President for Research.
